Amanda Whittington's plays include Be My Baby, which was first produced by Soho Theatre (1998). It returned a year later in the opening season of Soho's new Dean Street venue and then toured nationally. Be My Baby has been subsequently staged at Salisbury Playhouse, Olham Coliseum, Hull Truck and the Dukes Theatre, Lancaster. It is widely studied in schools and colleges across the country.
Amanda has a close association with Hull Truck Theatre, who have successfully staged five of her plays. The most recent was Amateur Girl (2009), a one-woman play about the amateur porn industry. Ladies Day was produced by Hull Truck in 2005, breaking all box office records at the theatre. A hugely successful national tour followed (2006) and the original cast were reunited in 2007 for the sequel, Ladies Down Under and subsequent national tour. Both the Ladies plays have become a popular choice for amateur companies in the UK and beyond. They have also made Amanda a best-seller for publisher Nick Hern Books.
Bollywood Jane began as a screenplay, winning the BBC2 Dennis Potter screenwriting award (2001). It was rewritten for the stage and produced by Leicester Haymarket (2003). The West Yorkshire Playhouse revival coincides with the 2007 Indian Film Academy awards, to be held in Yorkshire in June.Satin 'n' Steel was originally a 15-minute play, commissioned for the 2001 Get Shortie season at Nottingham Playhouse. It was developed into a full length play and co-produced in 2005 by Nottingham Playhouse and Bolton Octagon. It has been recently staged by Hull Truck and the Garrick Theatre, Lichfield. The Wills's Girls was produced by Show of Strength at the Tobacco Factory, Bristol in 2002, returning by popular demand a year later. It was adapted from Player's Angels, which told of life at the Nottingham cigarette factory. The Wills's Girls became a BBC Radio Four Woman's Hour serial. Amanda has written extensively for radio, most particularly for the Afternoon Play slot.
Players Angels, Last Stop Louisa's and The Boy on the Hill were produced by East Midlands rural touring company New Perspectives (1999 - 2001). The company later co-produced Saturday Night and Sunday Morning with Nottingham's Lakeside Theatre. Twist & Shout, Runaway Girl and Shirley's Song are a trilogy of youth theatre plays written for Young Perspectives and published by SchoolPlay. Early plays Home Comforts and Stand Up Cherry Pye were produced in Nottingham by Takeaway Theatre (1997/98).
